Biography
I am a traditional artist and writer originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota USA. I work primarily with acrylics on canvas or canvas paper, some charcoal and graphite specifically with portraiture/drawings. I also use Paintshop Pro to merge digital elements into my paintings and sketches.
I began painting in 2002 after a long hiatus from the visual arts. Almost immediately I felt myself draw to the works of Franz Marc (Particularly Blue Horses that resides at the Walker Art Center), and Georgia O’Keefe. I realized early on that I liked the idea of bio-morphic forms and the gentle suggestive feeling presented in both artists work. As a result I gave up attempting realism and started working purely on the form and emotive aspects of my subjects, in essence attempting to portray the spirit or idea of a piece. As this has been my goal, abstract and impressionistic styles have been the most apt form to describe my work. Alternately, (for an added sense of realism) I also work on faces, and portraiture in graphite and charcoal.
The main subjects of my works have been horses, females, emotional forms and abstract emotive forms. I am primarily drawn to the subject of horses, largely in part that I love the animals, have ridden for a number of years and was born and raised in the midwest. To me the form of the horse presents a multitude of emotions and expressions that I attempt to capture in my art, many of which have had a permanent impact on my life as I've lived and moved through the midwest.
Education
For the most part I am a completely self-taught painter and artist and have had minimal formal training in visual arts (save for several years working with pottery in college). However, art has always been an essential part of my life as a history professional, archivist, writer and artist. I seek to continually grow as an artist and seek experiences that will enrich my art.
